This edited volume offers new insights into the populist wave affecting democratic politics in many countries. It examines how authoritarian populist movements—especially in the US and Europe—reflect and amplify political polarization. The book explores how and why authoritarian populist sentiment has developed and been mobilized in democratic societies, and analyzes the implications of rising authoritarian, anti-immigrant sentiment for democratic governance. The contributors argue that liberals may need to move beyond open-border idealism and instead develop a liberal approach to immigration grounded in social planning, public services, community cohesion, and protection of vulnerable workers. Failing to do so could empower illiberal authoritarian forces and threaten the achievements of post-war liberal democracy.
