This second in a planned 10-volume set contains just under 100 alphabetically arranged articles. Examples of entries include Accounting, Consumer behavior, Ecolabeling, Fair trade, Greenwashing, Integrated Product Development, Marketing, Stakeholder theory, and Zero waste. Also covered are more than 30 industries such as Agriculture, Airline industry, Fast food industry, Hospitality industry, Mining, and Textiles industry and 11 entries on different segments within the energy sector (e.g., Bioenergy, Natural gas, Nuclear, Wind). Most articles are three to five pages long. Depending on the topic, information can include a definition, historical overview, US and international perspective, outline of key issues, current status, and trends and forecasts - information that should assist undergraduates with research papers, speeches, and other projects. Entries on companies, countries, and people are excluded. An index points to page references for countries and people but not companies, although companies are mentioned throughout this volume. Each article is signed. Of the 107 international contributors, many are from academia. Others work in industry or the nonprofit sector. Each article includes see also headings and further readings. Some readings list Web-based news articles and press releases, while others list more substantive journal articles and books. Charts and graphs are included. The well-illustrated second volume of Greenwood's Encyclopedia of Sustainability (2009) covers somewhat similar ground but in a different arrangement. Chapter 1 provides an overview, while chapters 2 through 5 detail definitions, the role of government, controversies, and trends. The Greenwood and Berkshire volumes complement each other. Sage's Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society (2008) contains only a few similar entries. The Business of Sustainability works on its own and can be purchased without purchasing the entire Berkshire set. Useful for academic and large public libraries. Also available as an e-book. -- Stephen Fadel --Booklist
