This book offers a comprehensive theoretical and empirical framework for analyzing bank performance in terms of profitability, competition, and efficiency. The authors first review and unify existing models and theories (profit maximization, market power, race among other theoretical constructs) into a basic framework. They then examine recent trends in banking and relate them to model assumptions. Afterwards, empirical analysis is provided using various competition/economy efficiency models (e.g. Bresnahan, Panzar-Rosse, Structure-Conduct-Performance, Cournot, scale & scope economies, X-efficiency). The book concludes with a synthesis and recommendations for future research. It is intended for researchers, policy makers, bank regulators, and students of finance and banking
