This edited volume examines the processes of political transformation and democratization across six Asian Muslim-majority countries — Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey — assessing whether democracy is appropriate and sustainable in non‑Western, predominantly Muslim contexts. Through country‑by‑country case studies, the book argues against the notion that Islam is inherently incompatible with democratic governance. Instead, it demonstrates significant variation across countries in historical trajectories, state institutions, and sociopolitical dynamics, concluding that democracy’s success depends less on religion than on political, social, and economic conditions.
