A seminal analysis comparing two major U.S. high-technology regions — Silicon Valley in California and Route 128 in Massachusetts. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews and historical data, the book argues that Silicon Valley’s decentralized, network-based industrial structure fostered cooperation, flexibility and innovation, while Route 128’s hierarchical and vertically integrated firms became rigid and less adaptable — explaining their divergent trajectories in the late 20th century.
