This scholarly work examines challenges in enforcing intellectual property rights (IPR) in the context of EU–China trade relations. Rejecting the myth that cultural philosophies like Confucianism justify weak IP enforcement—summarized poignantly as “to steal a book” is not an “elegant offence”—the author argues that piracy and counterfeiting stem from underdeveloped economic systems and institutional dysfunctions. Through analysis of legal negotiations, cultural dynamics, and TRIPS implementation, the book offers insight on aligning international IP frameworks with the specific economic and cultural realities of states like China.
