Tafsir al-Tabari (Jāmiʿ al-Bayān ʿan Taʾwīl Āy al-Qurʾān) is a monumental classical Qur'anic commentary written by Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari in the 9th–10th century CE. It is widely regarded as one of the earliest, most comprehensive, and most authoritative works of Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir) in the Islamic tradition.
The work explains the meanings of Qur'anic verses by drawing extensively on reports from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his Companions, and the generation of scholars that followed them. Al-Tabari carefully records multiple interpretations of a verse, analyzes their linguistic and contextual foundations, evaluates the reliability of transmitted reports, and often indicates the interpretation he considers most accurate. The commentary is distinguished by its preservation of early exegetical traditions, detailed discussion of Arabic language and grammar, and systematic scholarly methodology.
Because of its breadth, depth, and reliance on early sources, Tafsir al-Tabari has served as a foundational reference for generations of Muslim scholars and has significantly influenced many later Qur'anic commentaries, including those of Ibn Kathir and other classical exegetes. Today, it remains an indispensable resource for the study of the Qur'an, Islamic scholarship, and the intellectual history of Islam.
